The medical device sector is among the most regulated industries in the world. Requirements related to quality systems and products must be met for them to be compliant and receive Health Canada's approval.

MDSAP (Medical Device Single Audit Program), the unique audit program for medical equipment is an international assessment program for the quality management systems of medical device manufacturers who market their products in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, and the United States. Originally a voluntary process for manufacturers, obtaining a certificate of compliance with ISO 13485 within the framework of MDSAP became mandatory starting in 2019 for the Canadian market. Aligning the QMS with the requirements of this program allows for harmonization of audit requirements, standardization of audit reports, reduction of audit expenses (single audit), and better understanding of international regulatory requirements.
